Mimicry, by Remedios Varo
Saturday I went to see the marvelous Remedios Varo exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago. She is an amazing and criminally underrated artist; if you are in Chicago in the next couple months, it’s a must see.
Also yesterday I stumbled on Erica Drayton’s 100 word story project. And the two things clanged together and I wrote the piece below in like fifteen minutes. Enjoy (briefly)!
100 Words
A long time ago there was a story. It sat in its chair and told itself to itself.
A long time ago…
Its chair was made out of words. Its heart was made out of words. It did not bother with ears. It heard with its eyes when it read the story.
The story was also made out of words.
The words skittered up off the page, little black inky bugs, twisting themselves into inky knots. They chitter like eyes left on the page.
A long time ago is the ink in my hair. The bugs crawl into your eyes.
