Every awards season, it is born in upon me that I tend to hate the films and performances that the academy loves. Oppenheimer for example was about my least favorite thing I saw last year, but it won everything. Because most critics are benighted I guess? IDK.
This disconnect makes awards season an exercise in frustration, and also makes it more or less pointless for me to try to predict winners, since I just have no instinctive feel for what the academy likes. Generally I just make a list of my favorite films of the year and give up after that.
But! I’m now in the Chicago Indie Critics group, so I’ve been thinking about the individual awards more than I used to. And I thought I might as well provide my choices for some of the big standard categories. So if you’re curious who I think is the best supporting actor scroll down!
