Substack’s tech is truly weak, and the company shows no sign of investing to make it better. The upgrades have focused on enabling video and audio. Strange priorities for a company that promotes itself as a haven for writers. The only way I’ve found new writers is from writers promoting others. It’s not happening because of any ‘tools’ the company provides but because of the intellect and labor of other writers.

The cheerleaders for Substack appear to be profiting from being promoted by the company. It’s a jarring disconnect with the experience of most of us writing here. And that’s not even taking the Nazis into account. That just makes leaving a more urgent priority.

Some genius responses to opinion that keeping hate speech from being disseminated, but my favorite has to be (addressed to myself) “You’re stupid.”

I don't know. If you have a substack I'd suggest sharing the substack against Nazis letter as a first step, nad having Marisa Kabas add your name to the list.

I’m not optimistic about Substack’s tech bros suddenly getting some common decency in their game.

By now, “Hamish” could be an adjective, meaning “opportunistic and lacking moral compass .”

I love Everything Is Horrible and a few other Substacks. It is where I get enlightened about twice a week by my spiritual leader Kareem Abdul Jabaar among other stacks.

It is really distressing to think that some of my Stack money goes to a platform promoting Nazi's and other violent groups. How can readers help un-fuck this situation Noah?

I really don't know. You could try leaving a comment for Hamish on notes? I don't know if he's reading those though.

Teasing out additional issues and nuances is important, especially amid higher profile essays presenting platitudes as utopian gardens. Disingenuous, ignorant, or naive, I have no idea, but lots of people are basking in the glow of those platitudes. A broader lense and a better understanding of rudimentary concepts is essential, yet painfully lacking in much of the discourse.

There is I suspect a more significant story to discovered buried within this situation. the three founders all were previously founder or next level employees of a company known as Kik Interactive. I discovered from some recent reading that company also had significant moderation problems. One such example is quoted and linked to below.

-----------

"Nevertheless, Kik continued to grapple with the moderation issues that plagued its platform for so long."

Huh. That's interesting. You'd think that would lead them to be less cavalier about the whole thing...
