Living in a time where the survival of democracy may well hang on the hope that a scant few rogue Republicans will do the right thing when they finally have nothing to lose. Good grief.
Dan Pfeiffer noted today the very same thing: the incumbents don't immediately leave the office. I would argue that they could also make things very difficult right now by no longer supporting anything the administration wants. They are basically free agents as far as I am concerned and can vote for what is best for their constituents rather than the party. If those constituents were smart, they'd be calling those Senators and letting them know how they feel.
But on the flip side, if the current Senators no longer support the Republican Party, how would that affect the elections?
Cassidy and Cornyn agree with Trump's priorities well over 90% of the time. Further, if they want a future in Republican politics, switching sides would end it. They certainly aren't going to survive a Democratic primary. Finally, if they thought the Republic was in danger, I'm sure they would have already conducted themselves differently.

"It’s nice to see Cassidy try out a spine, which he removed during the RFK confirmation process."
Not literally, I hope...
