Really not looking forward to how klobuchar is going to handle things here in MN given that she's already giving off centrist quisling vibes.😣

During the Honeywell weapons demos in the 1980s in Minneapolis, where we lived, the women's affinity group was cruelly treated by arresting police. I took photos of it until I was arrested and removed.

They complained to the police chief, Tony Bouza, who they said told them, 'You should have all been gassed at 6 a.m.!'

I called Jim Klobuchar -- Amy's dad -- who was a prominent and popular columnist at the time. He was angry with me. "I don't believe it! Tony Bouza is a personal friend of mine!"

I sighed and said, 'Yeah, that's what my mother said too.'

Then he softened and said he would talk to the chief about it.

Chip off the old block?

Am I misremembering or wasn't Bouza's wife active in the Honeywell Project?

Yes, Erica Bouza voluntarily got arrested at one of the annual Honeywell project demonstrations, along with hundreds of others of us.

I was taking pictures of the sadistic treatment of the women’s affinity group being arrested, when I was confronted by an officer and was put in a paddy wagon myself.

It turns out I was the second person in there, after Erica Boza.

I asked permission to take her picture and she consented.

I often wonder if anyone else in the world has a photograph of the wife of the chief Police inside a paddy wagon.

Good memory, you.

Reason # infinity why Canada is different from the United States: We never surrendered control of our incarceration system to private interests. Thus, we know exactly who to blame if a jailbreak occurs...

Really nice parsing, with spot-on examples.

Thanks!

I get why centrist groups like Third Way want to blame the left for Democrats' loss in 2024 but Trump's return to power seems like a true condemnation of centrism and the excessive embrace of "norms/institutions" over preserving freedom. It's important to confront that or you risk more Biden/Garland/Manchin/Sinema problems in 2029.

Third way's screeds whining about "the left" sound just like 90's Fox news. Our Overton window has been dragged so far into Hitler's ass crack that third way is functionally just an arm of the Republican party now. If it ever was anything else.

The Democrats loss in 2024 was thanks to Muskratz

Just me being paranoid but, can these “centrists” actually be plants FOR the greater evil? I’ve often wondered if this is the rights’ way of getting their people elected by passing for the good guy! Isn’t that what Fetterman did?

Noah Berlatsky's avatar

no; the right hates them. they’re not plants any more than Chamberlain was. people sincerely think that the best way to deal with fascism is to give up.

So disappointed in Sherrill and Spanberger.

I'm a Liberal or Lefty as my daughter calls it, however I (and my colleagues) are trying to figure out how to win over more people in our community (predominantly Republican). What I've been trying to do is find out what we do agree on and go from there. I've been to many protests and rallies and yes I'm active in my community. While I understand the aversion to Moderates and Centrists, I also believe there's got to be a point where we all start talking again.

I guess I don't understand how Republicans using legal means to change their maps is stealing, but Democrats changing the retirement age for the supreme court, voting on an entire new body, and then appealing a decision they didn't like would not be stealing? Whatever it takes to defeat fascism, even if it smacks of authoritarianism, amirite?

the allies did pretty extreme things to fight fascism. you can certainly argue that some of them were wrong, but a lot of them were a lot more extreme than procedural radicalism in VA.

disenfranchising Black people is wrong and racist. fighting to get to a place where we have multi-racial democracy is good and right. you do not have to argue that there is no difference between good and bad things.
