It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen FMJ, so I’m hesitant to weigh in too much. There are things I like in the movie, but I feel it does not hang together well as a whole.

As for the exploitation aspect, I think you’re right, Noah, but then again…

FMJ is a satire, and like much satire, it’s particularly susceptible to the charge that it indulges in or exploits the very flaws it wants to expose and critique. You could say much the same about The Boys.

In some ways, though, The Boys is a more successful a satire because its exploitation is so over the top. It’s as if by going all in and then some (and then some more) on the brutality and cruelty, it transcends exploitation. That, or I just need to stop watching horribly exploitative drama and switch to period costume dramas and race car shows.

I think the Boys is less accomplished in various ways, but…I mean, I think the Boys is in fact intentionally antifascist, whereas I don’t think Kubrick really intended to make an antiwar film.

That’s interesting. What do you think his purpose was? The exploitation, or did he have another (perhaps more edifying) aim?

I think he likes the idea of war as a ritual of masculinity.

Probably true, but war is, in fact, a ritual of masculinity.
