lovely, thank you Noah, I love The Devil Finds Work and am so happy to see it appreciated. Baldwin's shockingly sharp skills as observer and interpreter are so bracing. old films, mostly from Hollywood, are one of my great passions and Baldwin proved you can love the films without succumbing to a nostalgic haze, that criticism can carry both the deepest affection and the sharpest, most incisive impressions about them.

Yeah, Baldwin was something. As he recedes into the past, it's hard to believe he would have only been 90, had he lived. Also, I hope you've seen Richard Brody's recent piece in The New Yorker, "In Defense of the Traditional Review", it's very good. https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-lede/in-defense-of-the-traditional-review

Baldwin, Ebert and the SF Gate’s Mick LaSalle were my go-to for years, Roger had this amazing ability, not really unique I suppose (it’s in the job description) to communicate the entirety of a film with no spoilers. (Which were not even called that then.)

I like Ebert okay! He was fun to disagree with. I don't care about spoilers though...
