As a fan of Chomsky, I’m always immediately skeptical of anyone who says he’s wrong. In this case, he also has the language idea wrong too. There’s evidence of elephants having some signs of recursive thinking. And I would argue that without a shared language, we can’t know if or to what extent other animals use recursive thinking. We know that language is so important that babies who aren’t talked to and sung to might never be able to speak, and those neglected children end up without their brains developing properly, leading to life-long disabilities. I am not an objective person in this case; I love language and the Word (or the gift of it anyways) is as good as god to me.

I recently read 71/2 Lessons about the Brain by Lisa Geldman Barrett, (highly recommend) and you’ve reminded me to reread it. Thank you and I hope you have a lovely Father’s Day.
