This Week's Writing 2/4/23
Taylor Swift, John Coltrane, Chicago calls for a ceasefire, and more
The kitty is watching another week stumble to a close. Here’s what I wrote…and if you find it pleasing/useful/entertaining, consider becoming a paid subscriber? The takes, they do not write themselves.
If you read one thing by me this week, read:
Amos and crowd sourced morality in the Expanse. (EIH)
Politics
Chicago’s movement for Palestine Liberation has won a number of important victories. (Prism)
Taylor Swift turns MAGA brains to jelly by watching football. (Public Notice)
Stop saying Trump is in mental decline. (EIH)
Cultural Criticism
Norman Teague and friends make art honoring John Coltrane. (Observer.com)
Why Murderbot is better than 1984. (American Purpose)
Star Trek TOS: The Wolf in the Fold, and incoherent misogyny. (EIH)
Why am I making lists of best albums by decade? Why won’t I stop? (EIH)
Poetry
Little surreal poem. (Five Fleas)
Sand
The prophet went walking.
The walking broke in half.
The halves become a chrysalis.
The chrysalis eats the dead.
The dead run down like red clocks.
The red clocks open the rain.
Rain bleeds a prophet.
It is walking on meaning like sand.
I was a sort of Taylor fan before all of this- she does write a catchy tune. Now, I straight up love her. I’m sure I’m not the only one. Attacking women that other women admire is not a winning strategy. (Commenting here because I’m not a paying subscriber at public notice).
It’s an interesting observation that RW media has swallowed the GOP-and it explains a lot.
On another topic, have you read the Murderbot Diaries? The crowdsourcing of morality made me think of this. I’m a fan of Murderbot.
Thank you for sharing your poetry. It always challenges me to think deeper.
