He's wrong to suggest that this is a solely American imperialist policy. British soldiers who served in the overseas territories and then returned to be cops in London would have undergone the same transformative usages, as would French overseas soldiers serving as cops in Paris.

Yes to all of this … AND. Isn’t Hedges frustrated with white Americans, who in the majority keep voting for Donald Trump, for fascist Republicans in Congress, and for fascist Republican governors? I share that anger! I’ve been a women’s rights activist and advocate for most of my career, and it makes me crazy that a majority of white women have voted for the Republican for President since the 1980s. A majority of white women voted for Trump not once, but three times.
I live in TN now, where i work with many white people actively resisting the federal and state fascist regimes. But we are badly outnumbered. Outnumbered, that is, by white women and white men who will sooner or later—probably sooner at this rate—be grievously harmed when they eventually speak out against the regimes they have long supported. As an activist I am disciplined not to dwell on my anger at them, but to focus instead on building and expanding the resistance. But if these are the people Hedges is railing about, I feel him.
Hedges doesn't frame it in quite this way. However...I mean, Pretti and Good were both white. White people's support for white supremacy is a huge problem, but as I try to say in the piece, it's the erosion of that support which is a big part of what has led to this huge fascist backlash.
I stopped reading Chris Hedges 20 years ago for the same reason I quit halfway through Chap. 3 of Hayek's The Road to Serfdom. Immersing myself in narrow-minded, ideological bullshit untethered to empirical reality gave me a stomach ache and seemed an unproductive use of my time.
So we owe a debt of gratitude to Noah Berlatsky for being a responsible intellectual and refuting the actual arguments of a tedious, boring, repetitive writer.
