I'm so often cynical and pessimistic. It is exactly for the reasons that you give. Thanks for the reminder to feel gratitude for those speaking truth to power. There was accountability in this NYC trial, and now we need to say loudly: trump's a convicted fellon.

That Warsaw Ghetto uprising photo is exactly right. Do the right thing, not merely because it’s right. It almost certainly isn’t for you. Do the right thing because it simply needs done, in the long term if nothing else, regardless of the cost to you personally.

There’s a lot of simple courage in that, and it deserves our examination and uplifting.

My 7th grade class has been learning about Resistance. There are so many stories of people and groups who didn’t see change in their lives, but they built a foundation. In the case of the White Rose, some lost their lives for their belief in their fellow citizens and that their words could move them. I don’t know if I have that kind of courage, but I still believe in people. It does matter, and you’re right that some things you fight for even if you have little chance of winning. But we have a good chance of winning.

So glad to hear that you’re teaching seventh graders these crucial history lessons. Isn’t the point of learning history to not repeat the same mistakes?! (One often wonders…)

"More charitably, I think people are often afraid to feel hope because they are afraid to have those hopes dashed."

Raises hand...

That being said, I felt REAL joy and hope at yesterday's verdict!

There needs to be an active campaign, like we had about seatbelts preventing auto accidents, to make people aware of how very dangerous this cleverer-than-thou cynicism is. Not just to discourage folks from doing it, but to empower other folks to (politely and constructively) call it out when they see it.

I would call myself a guarded optimist which can LOOK like cynicism to an outside observer. But cynicism is just pessimism with an extra dose of fatalism...not my speed

It's hard not to be cynical given how arrayed the forces of Right Wing Darkness are against us protecting that feces-flinging orangutan, and how...helpful to them the Mainstream Media is being by diminishing Biden. But...we are doing better as a country, and while I might not consider Biden the White Savior so many Liberals do he is so clearly a better President that to not vote for him baffles me.

I would feel better if Trump were FINALLY in an orange jumpsuit behind bars where he's belonged since January 6, 2021—no question in my mind he's a traitor to the country he swore to lead. I am proud of Judge Merchan (though I would've loved to see Trump jailed for contempt, along with his formerly-good lawyer) and the twelve jurors who voted to convict him of 34 counts of fraud, but I would feel better if that hypocrite Jesus Freak (but I repeat myself) Mike Johnson were struck by lightning in the Fox News studio and sent straight to Hell by a Just God, which is where HE belongs.

I won't feel safe until Biden's won the 2024 Election in a landslide, and the FBI, National Guard, and Democratic Party Leadership rounds up EVERY LAST TRUMP INSURRECTIONIST. (The fantasy of AOC and Jasmine Crockett handcuffing and perp-walking Bobert and Greene out of the House of Representatives...brings a smile to my face.)
