Thinking of "middle of the country" folks and I remembered the meme from Blazing Saddles.

New Sheriff Bart was insulted because he's black and Jim consoles him.

"You’ve got to remember that these are just simple farmers. These are people of the land. The common clay of the new West. You know—morons.”

I'm both appalled & disappointed, Noah, that you're excoriating Slotkin for some supposed racism here.

Thank you for correcting the Senator's name.

She was my US Representative for two terms, until we had re-districting. My district is NINETY-SEVEN percent WHITE. Not by design, but by the sheer fact that we have very few minorities moving out to the RURAL areas of Michigan. THAT is reality. THAT is what she's addressing in Idaho. Check the demographics all across the so-called "midwest." Not the big cities, but the myriad small towns and backwaters where people vote in large numbers.

Slotkin made it a point to campaign for all the people of Michigan when she ran for the Senate. She DOES take the big cities into account, but you need to remember that the narrow-minded, insular folks in what is quaintly called "the heartland" need to feel recognized too. Slotkin is not dissing the cities, she's not denigrating the cities, she's speaking to a bunch of rural white folks. The message is tailored to the audience, as political messages need to be.

The racist fuckwits in the "heartland" have always been represented. They're always coddled and recognized. It's past time to acknowledge everyone else in the country.

nkrempa's avatar

Ooookay. So, speaking to a bunch of "racist fuckwits," Slotkin SHOULD have acknowledged "everyone else." Gotcha.

Methinks, perhaps, you missed my point; that her speech was tailored to her audience? Or are you of the belief that politicians shouldn't do that anymore?

Lucius's avatar

I'm of the belief that the kind of pigfuck racists that need that kind of coddling are never going to vote for Democrats anyway, and that extending olive branches to them demoralizes the actual democratic base.

nkrempa's avatar

Ah, so, in plain terms, "screw the white rural voters." Okie dokie, I get it. I find it hard to blame Slotkin for giving a speech tailored to her audience, but you do you.

Noah Berlatsky's avatar

I didn't say screw white rural voters. I asked her to not throw literally everyone else under the bus.

nkrempa's avatar

YOU didn't say it, Lucius did. I'm not accusing you of that!!

The white rural voters that are never going to vote for anyone with a D next to their name?

And bluntly, yes. Fuck those bastards. They're the ones who have voted in the Republicans that destroyed this country for decades. Their willful ignorance is a big part of how we got here, so, again, fuck them. Everyone else has to clean up their mess, asking us to coddle them too is a bit much.

nkrempa's avatar

Dude, no one's asking YOU to "coddle" anyone. Be as militant as you want! Just don't excoriate a senator who attempts to make common cause with people at all levels, even the "pigfuck racists."

Slotkin voted for ALL of trump’s morons. I’ve called her one functional office many times! The one thing she’s done was stand up for troops. She’s just like Schumer & Booker & all the other dems we don’t have time for! Look around! Enough already! The days of coddling the white racists are over!

You might want to check Slotkin's voting record again. She did NOT vote for ALL of Donnie's morons. Some? Yes. All? Not even half.

"I'm in the business of winning elections". Welp, that could be the motto of every sitting establishment Democrat. Not "I'm in the business of serving Americans" or "I'm in the business of improving life for all Americans" or "I'm in the business of making the wealthy pay their fair share." It's the same milquetoast crap we're supposed to swallow year after year, election after election. She might as well have a sign on her desk that says "anyone who is not a corporate donor need not apply."

I really hate most Democrats today.
