Bernie's been courting the red brown crowd for a LONG time though.

He went on Rogan before it was cool, he also went on Chapo for that matter.

Tulsi gabbard was part of the sanders institute for years and years despite the fact that anyone who paid a second of attention knew she's a disingenuous reactionary. (I'm old enough to remember getting harassed by Bernie bros for pointing out how shitty she was, because she agreed with Bernie therefore was a True Progressive ™️)

He hired Matt orfalea, who got famous for making a video sexualizing the I Have A Dream speech, and who went on to use the phone bank information he had to call people and tell them not to vote for Biden in 2020

Cenk, TYT and the rest of the dirtbag sphere were his biggest fans.

His press secretary Briana grey joy is just a professional 4chan troll and boatshoe socialist par excellence who went on to openly praise trump, gren grenwald, and Tucker Carlson amongst other things.

And his fanbase was/is so rabidly aggressive that it made mainstream news at least once, which is fueled by his grievance baby tendencies.

again, it's kind of complicated...Sanders for most of his career has been a strong voice for a lot of genuinely progressive policies, and has worked well with other Democrats.

His campaigns were kind of a different thing, where he embraced anti establishment left communities, which ended up meaning some red brown garbage. But like Briahna Joy Gray has mostly repudiated Sanders now because he's a senator who works with Ds (which has always been the case.)

I sure wish he wasn't playing footsie with RFK right now though.

My read on it is that he's pissed that he never got the nomination and he's playing footsie out of spite. Basically pulling a Green Party.

He was also abusive to his staffers and didn't pay them a decent wage despite "fight for 15" being his shtick for a while. And he was also totally fine with his cultists calling warren a snake, really leaning into the whole White Dude Grievance, but Socialist!™️ Vibe.

Bluntly, I'm not inclined to give him BOTD anymore.

He and Biden worked together quite well (and are generally friendly.)

idk. I feel like he's always had downsides, like most pols, but in general he advocates for policies I agree with and support. I appreciate that he's been pushing to get the US to stop funding Israeli war crimes in Gaza, for example.

“This never works for the left though. That’s because the left actually believes in things and has a real material program it wants to pass.”

Nice stake through the heart of the lazy ‘both sides’ approach. Thanks.

The idea that anyone can believe anything coming out of Trump’s mouth quells my faith in humanity. How do these people put the shoes on without assistance, keep a job, blow their own noses? Trump is a malignant narcissist and pathological liar who has NEVER been capable of truth. I can’t even keep the radio on when he speaks anymore because of the frustration. How we got here is humiliating as an American!

Unfortunately "how we got here" can be summed up as "Christianity still exists". Until the country pulls it's head out of its ass and decides to actually do something about the unearned dominance Christianity has we're always going to be just a few baby steps from outright theocracy.

Excellent analysis as usual. I just don’t get how people don’t realize that Trump is constantly lying. He says whatever he thinks people want to hear and they fall for it every time.

I think some of it is an emperor's new clothes thing where people kind of know he's lying but are afraid to say so for various reasons.

Good comments!

The lies of the right also remind me of the goofy boasts of professional wrestlers to television cameras.

Our grown-up selves know how phony they are being, but our very young selves are awakened by an old sense of validation and excitement.

Right wing fascist lies I think generally have unfinished developmental gravity on their side.

It’s disappointing that some on the left turn out to be bootlickers.

I think of it as motivated belief. They believe in and support what gets them what they want.

A lot of white people who are at least ostensibly left leaning still buy into white supremacy to varying degrees (whether or not they're honest with themselves). I think that's a big part of it. Then there's the fact that a lot of people mistake "anti-establishment" contrarianism is the whole point.

To use a metaphor I saw back on Twitter regarding the punk scene and it's Nazi issue: two kinds of people gravitated to the punk scene. People who thought unfair rules were bullshit, and people who thought rules were bullshit. The latter is where you start getting fascist problems.

It's simple, they are uneducated. We just need better propaganda.

I think this is a common diagnosis, but I don't really think it's true? Glenn Greenwald has a lot of education! So did Heidegger. Sometimes education might help in certain situations, but there are a lot of very educated people who are fascists or fash curious.

Glenn kicked off his legal career defending a literal church of white supremacy, which is really telling. I think a lot of people *thought* he was more liberal than he really is because he opposed the Iraq war, but, well, a stopped clock is right twice a day and all that.

Yeah, he's a complicated and confusing figure. Libertarian with fascist leanings I guess; and he actually was an enthusiastic supporter of the Iraq war at first!

But he's been welcomed into a lot of left spaces and discussions, which I think is often as or more important as what people's ideology is.

I think that has more to do with a lot of people's tendency to think "anti-iraq war=leftist comrade!" And disregard anything else.

No, you misunderstand me, I mean educate the common folk. Create better propaganda on the Left that will persuade those that the Right has been acquiring to instead join our movement. We need to be cooler than the fascists.

I have to admit to some attraction to the “burn it down” idea. However, the way it’s being done is burning down all of the parts of government that help regular people. I want to burn down the corporations. To the fucking ground. And then roll around in the ashes gleefully.
