I try not to read Bret Stevens columns, but when I do, inevitably steam comes out the top of my head. So I am grateful to become aware of this most recent Brett Stevens opinion without my blood pressure rising. Big thanks to Noah, for the satisfying review.

I have to really wonder why guys like Stephens feel so threatened. Like, it's not enough to rule the world, you have to pull up the ladder behind you? Why on earth would literary awards--an area in which he has no skin in the game--be an affront to him? It's insanely insecure. It would be like railing against women getting medals in the Olympics. He will never, ever be a contender in these arenas. Why does he give a shit, and what harm does it do him directly?

He feels entitled to power over marginalized people in every venue.

It's just so weak and small-minded.

People are talking about him. Thats why.

Perhaps. If true, then it's a cynical way to get attention. But definitely from the same playbook as other right-wing shit-stirrers.

Ugh, I saw that Bretbug Stevens had written an article bashing the Natl Book Awards, and I could not force myself to read it. He is an infuriating lazy, mediocre white guy with a superiority complex and no self knowledge. Every time I read or hear him, my eyes roll so hard they practically pop out of my head. What an asshat. Thank you for reading the column so I didn’t have to, and thank you for tearing it into tiny shreds of stupidity in your critique.

Irony.

Stephens was previously married to Pamela Paul, the former editor of The New York Times Book Review. Did they divorce over DEI?

He's such an entitled fool.

Pamela Paul is notoriously transphobic, and probably agrees with Stephens about stifling marginalized voices.

Patt's avatar

I guess that’s why they married in the first place!

Wait, bret Stephens is still around?

There is, to a degree, biases against white men in 21st century publishing, considering the current preferred executive staff and publications at "The Big Five". But Stephens here is exaggerating that to an unhealthy degree that helps nobody in this debate.

Tell that to (some) white men…
