I am heartily sick of the phrase “I didn’t vote for THIS!” from Trump voters. Yes you did. When you vote for a bad man, a man with no character, zero integrity, no morality, no patriotism, an ignorant man, this is what you get.
This is why I have no patience for people who vote for a specific issue, say immigration, without considering the person they’re putting in power. Doesn’t character matter anymore in America? Shouldn’t the President be, at the very least, a decent person?
I think you cant undercount the effect of shitty corporate media, many people believed Biden just let criminals come into the country unvetted and they were running around killing people and Trump was going to finally stop the lawlessness by deporting the "rapists and murderers" Only an uninformed, stupid or willfully ignorant person could believe this but that false beleif made entirely possible by corporate media quoting Trump and using GOP framing in all of its headlines. The uniformed don't read NY times or WAPO but they scroll through headlines on apple news or get their news through social which is influenced by NY Times and WAPO. Corporate media, by not speaking plainly and succinctly and using shitty misleading headlines whitewashed and legitimized this stupid belief of the ignorant.
You’re exactly right. The near term problem is neutralising Trump’s dictatorship. But he’s simply the beneficiary of decades of Republican disenfranchisement of non-white and liberal voters, and centuries of social injustice. The goals must be two-pronged: structural change to protect democracy and social pressure to inhibit hateful acts and speech. No one is cured of bigotry, but can be shamed. The German people didn’t see the light after WWII, but they were shamed into taking actions that stifled hateful impulses.
Project 2025 was all of the policies that have now been made flesh but DT voters brushed it aside and leaned into his claims that he wasn't associated with it at all. The first person he appointed to his cabinet was Russ Vought. Every one of their goals have been implemented in some form or another. They're still working on whatever further devious plans might have occurred to them now that they're drunk and giddy with their successes. We were warned. They were warned. We knew. They didn't care. They voted for all of it out of mostly willful ignorance. Hurt them, not us and that's exactly what they voted for. Next month, there are going to be all kinds of hard feelings but they'll figure out how to blame Biden somehow. No one can accuse the average DT voters of using or even having even rudimentary critical thinking skills. Look how much contempt they have for universities and higher learning. They reject all of it.
All great points. However, let's not dismiss the stunning level of ignorance of some MAGA voters: My next-door neighbor related a convo she recently had with her clueless MAGA cousin. My neighbor gave an honest response to "How are you?", letting Cousin know how distressed she is by the DOGE/Musk attack on our institutions. The response? "What's DOGE? Who is Elon Musk?" Forget voter ID; a civics literacy test would be a more practical hurdle to impose. I'm finding schadenfreude much less satisfying than I expected; these are terrifying times, diminishing my glee at the self-imposed suffering of these heartless morons.
I have many MAGA relatives who were horrified by Trump in 2015 and decided by mid 2016 that they could tolerate him to get the SCOTUS they wanted despite his immoral behavior. Then most of them watched nothing but Fox news and became cult members. And they think I am delusional. They wanted deportations and aren’t drawing the line at “deporting” citizen children with undocumented mothers. It is actually human trafficking

Apparently not.
