The movie really wasn’t intended as a Star Trek parody per se, despite the cosmetic similarities of the characters. A much better example of a comedic parody of a dramatic original would be “Spaceballs” and “Star Wars.”

??? It's obviously intended as a parody! Even the title is a giveaway!

Spaceballs is great though.

I didn’t explain my thought well, although you may still disagree. I think it’s more a parody of Trekkies: both the Thermians, who believe the series and its characters are real, and the human fans who behave as if they do. In that sense it’s a bit like “The Three Amigos,” actually. I do agree that the fictional “Galaxy Quest” series is intended to be Star Trek.

Well, it's supposed to be both, I think? I mean, there's pretty explicit mocking of the original series for its sexism and its technobabble...

It’s been a while since I’ve seen the movie, but I’m sure you’re right. I’m on board with “both.” And I enjoy your TOS columns very much.
