Americans keep voting for elderly people. Why? They don't stay in office via some special old people power club, a wide range of people choose to keep them in office at the ballot box.

there are a couple things that have increased average age in office in house/senate. one is just increasing life spans. the other is increasing partisanship, and consequent reduction in competitive seats. that means incumbents are less likely to lose office, and so more likely to stay in office longer.

in the senate in particular it tends to be something you do as a career peak, so it takes people a while to get to that point.

Nuts—I keep writing responses and I have to get rid of every one because I'm just so GALLED by the weaksauce incompetence of the Democratic Party and refusal to bully Senate Republicans into whimpering submission like they deserve!

At least Feinstein will most likely get succeeded by a Democrat, thanks to California having a Democratic Governor....
