thanks for reposting this, Noah. ever since I first heard of him maybe a decade ago, Peterson set off all my alarms. at that time he was sweeping up mostly men, it seemed, into his thrall, and they were besotted with the guy. has he lost any of. his luster for these followers or is he still a big noise in that anti-woke scene? it was the misogyny that first alarmed me, and his general high-handed "don't question me" mien.

A worthy reprint. One might add an afterward to the piece, though, that Peterson's languaging against gender-diverse people has become simply vile. There is no fellow traveler-itis going on there. His bigotry in that zone is not just anti-human, it's snide - as if he seems to be deriving pleasure in crapping on the validity of trans people from his lofty perch.

Yeah, he's definitely enthusiastic in his hatred of both trans people and women, I'd say.

I follow Danny Lavery’s Substack The Chatner and yesterday he noted that scene in Auntie Mame from the 1958 of the dinner party where Auntie Mame puts the bigoted antisemitic future in-laws in their place. It’s a bizarre twisted bit where the unwed pregnant Jewish personal secretary Agnes Gooch is made to be a caricature of a nerdy unattractive emotionally labile pregnant mess. You can feel how Jewish people were blacklisted in the 50’s, and yet bigoted antisemitism was skewered as base and uncouth. The nostalgia of- Make Nazis bad again!

Minor point: I thought Agnes Gooch was Catholic? Or is that simply in the musical and subsequent movie?

It is odd to look at Cold War America and see a strong pro-intellectual Liberal embrace of Judaism straining against the raging racism and antisemitism of the Right. On the one hand, you had anti-communist Jewish intellectuals like Susan Sontag and Henry Kissinger, while on the other you had the Bircher ravings of Robert Welch and Fred Koch, who always seem like they're barely holding back screeds about "the international conspiracy of Communists and Jew bankers"!
