Thank you for this article and helping me think through this issue.

We have such powerful police unions here. Where I live, they circle the wagons whenever there’s any criticism. About 15 years ago, a police officer shot an unarmed 15 year old (to death). The internal investigation resulted in not even a jury trial because the union put so much pressure on. Any attempt to defund will need a strategy for the unions.

People are more ready than they ever have been.

Fighting fascism will help us ensure we have elections in the future, which is foundational to being able to win one.

I think police unions should be outlawed. you don’t have unions in the army, and the same logic applies here. it’s extremely dangerous to have armed agents of the state build collective power to assure themselves impunity.

Amen, police have made it clear that they will use unions to grant themselves impunity.

I appreciate you sharing the findings about the electoral effects of the Black Lives Matter protests. I hadn't seen that before, and it's good to see. It looks like it may be the exception rather than the rule, but still encouraging ( https://www.library.hbs.edu/working-knowledge/do-protests-and-social-movements-sway-voters-not-really-except-for-one ).

Wait, you're telling me Sir Hakeem, The Not-Quite-So-Brave as Sir Lancelot, is actually talking about defunding ANY branch of law enforcement?

I didn't think he had the balls to stand up to those Fascist thugs.

ICE was not actually created to carry out mass deportations but for brutal intimidation and media drama. It is important to remember that in Obama's first administration over 9 million illegal aliens were deported with no great drama that I can recall. Looking very coldly as a taxpayer at ICE, I think a good argument for defunding it is simply that it is not doing its supposed purpose although it is made to look like it. NBC news has been collecting data both from public data and internal ICE data which shows monthly deportations of only between 11,000 and 18,00 between February and June. (ICE does not regularly release figures.) Meanwhile we are funding detention centers around the country and of the 435,000 unauthorized immigrants with criminal convictions in the United States not in custody which ICE reported to Congress, its has arrested 752 non-citizens convicted of murder out of 13,099 and 1,693 convicted of sexual assault out of 15,811. Border crossings have decreased but that was never the main source of illegal aliens, and there would be many in the agricultural sector who would sorely miss them. The main source is individuals who overstay their visas.

deporting people like this is always brutal and violent and disruptive. under obama, a lot of people died in ICE detention.

undocumented peopel are people; they are only in teh US against the law because we’ve decided to make border crossing an arcane nightmare for no other reason than racism. Ice is bad, but the reason it’s bad is just an extension of the logic that guides all our immigration policies currently—hate, fear, xenophobia, racism.

Whoa there, Cowboy!

When you name those reasons all together it feels heavy.

Yikes.
