spot fucking on...In particular the last paragraph...Drop the decorum...Drop the assumption and subsequent lip service that this is a legitimate court...That we have no viable means to remove these fascists does NOT make them legitimate...In fact, many state supreme courts and state legislatures are ALREADY challenging that legitimacy by making rulings and passing legislation that PROTECTS people from this rogue court...And by adding the recent ballot initiates and referendums in OH, KS, and AL that put women's right to bodily autonomy INTO FUCKING LAW...

The more that (some) states are forced to protect its citizens from this SCOTUS, the WEAKER this SCOTUS becomes...I really don't think they've grokked this yet, being so high on their own supply as they are...

Gillers added that while Alito’s explanation was “hard to believe, it is more credible than the view that he knowingly chose to fly the flag upside down knowing its political message.” Where do they come up with these loony tunes like Gillers? It's like I say "the sky sure is blue today" and he counters with "no you big dummy it's green" and WAPO is like well, we have to treat both sides of the controversy with respect. FFS

It is political malpractice for Democrats to not hang this latest insult around the GOP. This line is brilliant: "Nuance and context are useful and worthwhile. But you don’t want to get so distracted by nuance and context that you deny reality or make excuses for evil." The problem is that Alito knows better but is fueled by his condescension and hatred of perceived enemies rather than a love of a diverse nation.

How does Stephen Gillers deal with the further excuse that the fuck trump signs were at a school bus stop that no kids were actually using? Were Alito et.ux. also unaware of the pandemic? Has anyone asked et.ux. how she likes being thrown under the bus?

I do need to point out to those who excoriate the NYT that it was the NYT that broke this story.

"I do need to point out to those who excoriate the NYT that it was the NYT that broke this story."

The fact that they can and do provide good reporting makes them even MORE insidiously dangerous. Its a Trojan Horse problem. We would be MUCH better off if we could summarily and conclusively dismiss them entirely like The Dail Mail or the Ntl Inquirer. Mixing deliberately derelict reporting with excellent reporting creates a fog of confusion for many people. Very much analogous to the cycles of an abusive relationship

It certainly needs improvement in controlling the bias of its owners and accountants. One can’t eliminate the biases of people—everyone has them. Controlling them is a whole different thing. The only way that will happen is continual input from those who care. I don’t think cancellation is the platform from which any useful input can emerge.

The input is both TO the NYT (and other MSM) and showing instances of the failures, not so much to excoriate as to alert people how to read and analyze what the reporting is doing. As a place to practice our own critical thinking, the NYT is a pretty good source.

This is beyond bias though...their continuous smear campaign against Biden and democrats in general is no accident...

The interesting thing I’ve found is that the smears seem to be more in the headlines than the actual stories. I often think the reporters must tear their hair over what the headline writers come up with. The headline writers are much more a matter of editorial control than the actual stories. I have noticed that the mind blowing misleading headline is becoming less common. Perhaps input is working.

very true...and the NYT KNOWS that that's as far as many people go...A variety of false advertising if you think about it...

Actually I think many people don’t even go by what they actually read of NYT headlines, but by what other media REPORT the NYT headlines say. A lot of people influence by the headlines don’t actually read the NYT and thus have no ability (as opposed to inclination) to compare the headlines to the story.

This is where the NYT is most failing—in not recognizing the distortions that the internet age can promulgate throughout the population.

I also think they actually need to pay more attention to trump and his “message”. Early on the media were criticized for paying too much attention and thereby promoting trump just by repetition. So they may be shying away this election cycle. But what trump is saying now is exponentially worse than what it once was, both in political content and in sheer garble (what I am now calling “non-word salad”—those glitches more and more looking like senility). The NYT had no reporting of the NRA speech with its vacant stare and its continuing inanities, including a vow to remove funding from schools with vaccine mandates—which is pretty much all of them.

I did, btw, write to the NYT asking why they didn't cover that speech. Doubt I'll get a response, but if we all do it, the principles of Water Torture may apply.
