Spring

after Tu Fu

In an occupied city
the bees still wander
from flower to flower.
They know no border.

The crows on branches budding
clack their fearless beaks.
The river in calm ripples
flows on and does not weep.

Spring speaks and we are silent.
I would pay bee, river, or crow
for the news of all their travels
where we no longer go.

For news of where they travel
through summer and through fall,
and of when they may return
to some other winter thaw.
